Dr. Stefan G. Stanciu (Project Director): received his PhD in Electronics Engineering and Telecommunications at University Politehnica of Bucharest (UPB) in 2011, and further on served as a postdoc fellow at ETH Zurich, and UPB. He is currently acting as Senior Scientific Researcher at University Politehnica of Bucharest his activities taking place at the Center for Microscopy-Microanalysis and Information Processing. Stefan’s main research interests revolve around high- and super-resolution imaging by scanning laser and scanning probe microscopies and his current research agenda focuses on optical characterization of biological species and advanced materials using combined photonic approaches; he is also interested in the development of novel machine intelligence frameworks for automated disease diagnostics and microscope image analysis. He published so far over 40 journal articles (~lead author for ~30%) and 25 proceedings articles indexed in Web of Knowledge, including in Biomedical Optics Express, Scientific Reports or IEEE Access. Among others, Stefan acted as PI for over 5 research grants, including four projects funded by UEFSICDI (MICRONANO, MICAND, CESESY and NANOMATBIOIMAGE) and represents Romania as Management Committee member in two COST Actions: CA15124 “A new Network of European BioImage Analysts to advance life science imaging (NEUBIAS, 2016-2020)”, where he also acts as ITC Conference Grants Coordinator, and CA16124 “Brillouin Light Scattering Microspectroscopy for Biological and Biomedical Research and Applications (BioBrillouin, 2017-2021)”. Currently, Stefan acts as Lead Guest Associate Editor for Frontiers in Physics and Frontiers in Physiology coordinating a Research Topic on Labe-Free Tissue Imaging with Laser Scanning Microscopy. Stefan’s homepage is available here, and his CV can be downloaded at this link.

Dr. Radu Hristu: is a Lecturer at the Physics Department in University Politehnica of Bucharest. He is conducting his research activities at CMMIP-UPB since 2007, the year when he graduated from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecomunications and Information Technology, in the field of Microelectronics, Optoelectronics and Nanotechnologies. In 2012 he defended his PhD thesis which was devoted to investigations on semiconductor materials and devices by using high resolution optical microscopy techniques. His areas of expertise are laser scanning microscopy (instrumentation and applications), scanning probe microscopy (instrumentation and applications) and optoelectronics.

Dr. Denis E. Tranca: has graduated the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology at Politehnica University of Bucharest in 2010. In October 2015 he defended his PhD thesis, which covered new investigation approaches using scattering-type Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy. Currently he is acting as Lecturer at the Physics Department of Politehnica University of Bucharest and his research interests are related to scanning probe microscopy, high-resolution optical microscopy techniques (especially different variants of scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy), new detection and investigation applications for scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy and also image processing techniques.

Dr. Alina Holban: is acting as Researcher and Teaching Assistant at the Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology, Univ. of Bucharest. She holds a Bachelor degree in Experimental Biology (Faculty of Biology, University of Bucharest (UB), 2004-2008), a M.Sc. degree in Genetics, Microbiology and Biotechnology (UB, 2008-2010) She defended her PhD thesis on the field of molecular microbiology in 2013 and between 2014-2015 she completed a Postdoctoral training at the University Politehnica of Bucharest, developing smart nanomaterials functionalized with plant-derived compounds with antibacterial activity. To date Alina achieved 2 international research internships (1 year) in UK, 1 international course in drug development (Austin, Texas), 1 international prize (Taiwan), 1 national prize and 3 travel grants. Current research focuses on alternative therapeutic approaches (by using nanotechnology, natural molecules and signalling modulators) to reduce microbial resistance and manipulate virulence and biofilms.
